Donkeys love to roll in dusty spots, particularly after being lovingly groomed by our carers! They will create a rolling patch by pawing at the ground to remove the grass where there is sandy soil; each donkey patiently waiting his turn to roll on the same spot!
Whilst rolling is very enjoyable for the donkeys to rub their backs on the ground, there is also good reason for it too. When a donkey stands up after rolling, he will only shake his head and ears to remove excess dust. In their natural desert environment, dust provides great insulation and protection from both hot and cold conditions.
This video shows one of our donkeys, Gerald, having a roll. He is seven years old and is a friendly and bright individual. He is cared for at Woods Farm, one of our six outlying farms in Devon. Gerald is currently on a diet, living in a special 'weight watchers' group.
