Learn, touch and love at The Donkey Sanctuary

One of the top ten 'Best Family Days Out in Devon' - The Telegraph, 2016.

We currently have an incredible 6,300 donkeys in our care worldwide. Come and meet some of the 500 in Sidmouth waiting to see you.

Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our working farm is home to donkeys mules and hinnies large and small. Can you find the gentle giant Poitou donkeys, gorgeous adoption donkeys or spot a miniature in one of the fields?

Our donkeys love to meet new people and you can discover their unique characters and stories. You can even enjoy giving a scratch behind the ears to one of our Main Yard donkeys.

Admission and parking is free (donations welcome) and we are open 365 days a year.

Dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a lead, and many of our farm trails are bike-friendly.

Winter opening hours:We are now operating our winter opening hours which means that the restaurant and gift shop will be closed at 4pm each day.

Feeding policy

We ask that you do not feed the donkeys as it encourages them to expect food from everyone and fingers can look deceptively like carrots to a donkey. Some foods also present a choking hazard. Kindly pass any treats to staff in the Visitors' Centre and Gift Shop who will ensure they are distributed to the donkeys at feeding time.

What to wear

Please remember we are a working farm and many of our walkways are grass, so bring footwear suitable for the weather. Much of your time will be spent outdoors so please plan for every eventuality with our great British weather.

Adopt a donkey

Come and visit our adoption donkeys and make a friend for life. There are special Meet the Groom sessions running every morning and afternoon which offer a chance for you to hear all the donkeys' latest stories and get to know these delightful characters better. Just pop in to our Visitors' Centre and Gift Shop when you arrive to find out more.
