With spring well on its way, our donkeys are once again enjoying the freedom of their paddocks after 'turn out' where they can have a good run around and kick up their hooves (as captured on video earlier this month).
With this freedom comes the risk of injury to our younger male donkeys who love to kick a ball around their paddock. And with lads being lads, this can lead to the odd kick landing painfully. We believe we now have the answer to how we can protect their legs.
Today we are trialling specially adapted shin guards for our football playing foals. These will help to protect their lower legs from being kicked and bruised by other donkeys.
As with footballers, shin guards are intended to be worn underneath socks and our trial will be looking at how we can ensure the guards stay in place while our donkeys are running around for long periods of time playing football.
Based on the results from today's trial, we could be looking at designing and developing various sizes of shin protectors for our donkeys and introducing them to the donkeys by this time next year.
