Four months ago, a friendly bobby on the beat stopped his police car in the middle of Bunford Lane in Yeovil, Somerset to pick up a lost toy donkey. He was given a ride in the police officer’s car to Yeovil Station while they tried to find his owner.
Despite national enquiries, including a mention on ITV News and social media, no owner stepped forward to collect Donkey (as he was named) and it was feared that Donkey would be homeless.
As an act of compassion, we contacted Yeovil Police offering to give Donkey a home and delighted to hear that he was in good health and condition when found and had clearly been loved by his owner.
Donkey had to remain in police custody for a statutory period of time to give ample opportunity for somebody to come forward, after which time a decision would be made to Donkey’s fate.
After the long wait, we are delighted to announce that The Donkey Sanctuary was chosen as the ideal new home for this little lost donkey and he was officially handed into our care today.
We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at Yeovil Police Station for all their efforts in trying to find Donkey’s owner and for taking good care of him whilst he remained in the front office hoping for his owner to walk in and collect him.
Bobby, as we have now called him, will now spend some time meeting our real donkeys while he settles in and the first donkey he met on his arrival was Aramis, one of our adoption donkeys.
Adopt a donkey
Our donkeys come to us for many different reasons, such as neglect, abandonment or just because their owners can no longer care for them.
By adopting a donkey you'll guarantee their future with us where they will never want for warmth, care or food again.
