Our Spanish Sanctuary, El Refugio del Burrito, is appealing against a Spanish court’s decision to overturn the case against a dealer from whom we rescued 9 donkeys in desperate conditions last year in the biggest rescue in the sanctuary’s history. And you can help by signing our petition.
In June 2013 we found nearly 40 equines kept in terrible conditions in a dealership near Alicante in southern Spain. Several were so weak they had to be put down straight away. Others were emaciated and exhausted having been tied up 24 hours a day.
Thankfully the surviving donkeys have been taken to our Spanish sanctuary in Fuente de Piedra. However we remain concerned that despite our criminal complaint and a number of official reports calling for the closure of the farm the court in Orihuela, near Callosa de Segura, has thrown out the case and the dealer continues to operate.
We are collecting signatures to ask the local authorities, the City Council of Callosa, and the Department of Agriculture, to act to close the dealership down – and to help the animals that could not be rescued at the same time as the donkeys and those that have been taken there since.
