There are many ways to raise money for charity... running marathons, sponsored walks, cake sales and... shaving off your hair!
When Debs decided to shave her hair off, her friends and family thought she was mad, but then they found out her reason for doing it. Due to her love for donkeys and witnessing the impressive work our donkey assisted therapy centre in Leeds carries out, she decided to raise money for the Centre.
Debs says: “I love that there is a local centre, it does so much for the community. The staff are so friendly and they made me feel really welcome. I love donkeys, I find them really soothing, they are lovely souls to spend time with.”
From a young age, Debs has always had a soft spot for donkeys and has been a supporter for many years. The hair event was held at Debs’ workplace at The British Library in Wetherby on her 50th birthday - a great way to spend a special birthday!
As she heard the buzzing sound of the clippers there was no going back. She was understandably nervous, but as soon as she saw the crowd of friendly faces, family, work colleagues and friends she was put at ease and found the whole experience liberating.
A week before the event Debs dyed her hair bright red and during the event she flaunted a Mohawk for 30 minutes, this gave her the opportunity to collect more donations “I feel that I’m getting my money’s worth from my earring collection, and I’ve had to buy hats that cover my cold ears (brrr), but on the up side, I’m using less shampoo!”
Debs visited our donkey assisted therapy centre in Leeds and met Doodles, William and Ripple. Ripple was his usual lovely self and rested his heavy head on Debs’ shoulder, which was his most endearing move.
Debs wouldn’t have been able to get this close to the donkeys last year. She was unable to move easily due to having two knee replacements which left her having to learn to walk again and suffering a long and difficult recovery.
So far, Debs has raised an impressive £160. To sponsor this courageous lady, please visit her Justgiving fundraising page at http://www.justgiving.com/DebsDonkeys
We’d like to say an enormous thank you to Debs and happy birthday from all the donkeys and staff here at The Donkey Sanctuary.
