If you read my first blog you will have heard about poor little Reuben who had to be put to sleep recently. Donkeys bond very strongly with their companions and it is important that in such situations they are left together for the remaining donkey to grieve. Following this, we at The Donkey Sanctuary then have a mission to find a new and suitable friend as soon as possible for the remaining donkey.
Nero is a young, fit donkey who wants a donkey friend that he can play around with of a similar age. Ness (Vanessa O'Brien) in our Welfare team chooses suitable donkeys for foster homes to match people and donkeys and she thought Buba would make an ideal match for Nero. Buba came into the Sanctuary as a 2 year old in 2006 when he lost his companion. Sounds perfect!
News came in last week that Buba was to arrive from Devon on Tuesday at lunchtime. Nero's foster parents were informed and I made arrangements so I could be there. I was all excited to see him come off the lorry, but I’d missed my chance as Ian (one of our drivers) had such a good journey up that he beat me there and Buba was already unloaded and surveying his new surroundings with Nero in hot pursuit. Luckily Tony (foster Dad and professional photographer) was ready with his camera to capture everything.
First impressions are that Buba is very affectionate and won't take any nonsense from Nero who was the "boss" of Reuben and has secretly enjoyed being "Top Donkey" since he passed.
I'm hoping they will become great friends, playmates and a source constant of enjoyment to their fosterers.
