The "beach boxes" are a set of wooden stables that can be found on Walk A, one of the many walks around the Sanctuary.
When these stables were first built, they originally housed retired beach donkeys that came into the Sanctuary. Many beach donkeys have, or are enjoying, a very peaceful retirement here at the Sanctuary, after giving years of enjoyment to children on our beaches. Today, the beach boxes offer field shelter to Chloe (pictured above) and her friend Chantelle, who are two of our resident Poitou donkeys as well as Cobus, a miniature donkey and his friend Pedro. Both have recently been joined by four miniature donkeys - Twiggy, Brandy, Star and Gem.
Since 2003, the Sanctuary has been organising "Britain's Best Beach Donkeys" competition. With four regional welfare areas, each area is judged throughout the year to find the best group and best individual for that area. The regional areas are:
- East of England
- North and Mid-Wales, Midlands, Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cleveland
- South and South East England
- South West England and South Wales
