The story of Spice
In 2014 we rescued over 600 donkeys and mules from a life of suffering and neglect. Every rescue varies significantly and Spice and her 12 donkey friends were saved in the depths of violent storms. They were being battered relentlessly by the extreme weather, fighting for their lives, with little shelter from the wind and rain.
Spice is a beautiful 16-year old brown mare. She is a gentle and incredibly sweet natured donkey who loves having her gorgeously floppy ears rubbed. You can see by the pictures that those ears are one of her most distinguishing features!
We rescued Spice and her friends in February 2014, as ferocious winds and torrential rain caused havoc in the south west. Their stable was in disrepair and they were literally living in a mud bath.
Following her dramatic rescue she is now living out her days in the safety of The Donkey Sanctuary in Devon. Having made a remarkable recovery, Spice now looks content in her spacious home where she is surrounded by all her donkey friends.
Every donkey that comes into our care receives excellent treatment and attention from our dedicated team to ensure they enjoy a happy and healthy life.
