Jaffa and Jacko are lovingly cared for by Mary Beetham in Lancashire through our Rehoming Scheme.
You may be familiar with Jaffa’s name — we told his heroic story in an earlier newsletter, about how he foiled a potential burglary at Mary’s home!
His unusually loud bray, “the loudest ever”, had raised the alarm and sent the intruders packing.
Now Jaffa is a hero once again. Since last spring this special donkey has been cuddled, groomed and walked every Tuesday by Susan Manford, who lives in the local area and benefits immensely from interacting with Jaffa.
Susan struggled with her confidence after she fell off a horse and broke her shoulder.
She was too frightened to take up the saddle again and deeply upset that she didn’t have anything to occupy her time.
Susan’s coordinator approached Mary, who is known in the village as the ‘donkey lady’, to ask if Susan could come and look at the donkeys. Mary’s response was, “She’ll have to come and groom them if she wants to look at them!”
“Susan came along and, despite being extremely nervous the first time, she returned the following week, and the next week, and so on.
"She’s a great help and is learning new things… She gets the headcollars out, we put them on the donkeys, and we take Jaffa and Jacko for a walk, pick out their hooves and groom forever. Jaffa and Susan share a very special relationship that’s just wonderful to see.”
