Ever wondered how donkeys are trained to long rein or to pull a cart?

Some of the donkeys at the donkey assisted therapy centres and at Slade House Farm are trained to draw carts.

Long reining and driving are great activities to provide enrichment for the donkeys as well being a very effective way to keep them physically and mentally fit so they can carry out their donkey assisted therapy work better.

The run of my life

This is my final blog before I face the challenge of completing the 26.2 mile course of the London Marathon on Sunday 24 April in aid of The Donkey Sanctuary. Before I have even taken that first step over the starting line, I know this has been the most incredible journey I have ever been on. My training miles now equates to over 12 full marathons.

My latest blog comes to you as I face less than one month to go before I commence the challenge of running this year’s London Marathon for The Donkey Sanctuary as part of the Golden Bond team.

Eat.. sleep... run... repeat: Confessions of a stubborn girl running, with a love for cake

It seems like an age ago that I was contacted with the very exciting news I had been awarded a Golden Bond place to run this year’s London Marathon for The Donkey Sanctuary. In the blink of an eye I have completed 200 training miles and it is now 8 weeks to go until the big day and excitement has most definitely turned into terrified nerves. With the deadline (24 April) fast approaching, I thought I would bring you all an update as my training steps up a gear in the last 2 months, with long training runs involving 20 miles plus are looming.

Do it for Donkeys: Naomi's London Marathon

My name is Naomi Kinsman - everyone knows me as Nays - and I simply love my job as the Centre Coordinator for the Ivybridge Donkey Sanctuary which is home to 18 happy, well cared for donkeys.

The Donkey Sanctuary is such a special, inspiring place to work and since joining the charity in 2014, I have been inspired to take on a personal challenge to help raise vital funds for the work we do.

I am taking on my first full 26.2 mile marathon, simply because it is one of the hardest challenges I could have set myself taking me completely out of my comfort zone.

Celebrating 40 Years of donkey assisted therapy

On the 25 November 2015 The Donkey Sanctuary is celebrating 40 years of providing donkey assisted therapy.

40 years ago the vision of The Donkey Sanctuary's founder Dr Elisabeth Svendsen began a journey which has since given happiness to many donkeys, children and adults.

Our founder, Dr Svendsen, had the idea of bringing together children with additional needs, and donkeys who were healthy and happiest when socialising with humans… so in November 1975 she set out to make this dream a reality.

New donkey assisted therapy programme for schools in London

The Donkey Sanctuary has now begun offering donkey assisted therapy to seven schools in London, following the huge success of previous mobile services to schools for children with additional needs.

The mobile services are run with specially trained donkeys from Sidmouth and Ivybridge, who are being stabled over the summer months at a base in Hertfordshire. The four donkeys, named Austin, Boyo, Pharaoh and Tiny Tim will travel to seven different schools, where children with additional needs will take part in riding or grooming and learn about donkey care.

Giving the gift of friendship

As Farms Equine Assistant, one of my main jobs has been to visit all our potential foster donkeys. I go with a colleague from our welfare team to assess their suitability before putting the donkeys forward to have a thorough medical examination with one of the vets; to ensure they have a perfect bill of health before hopefully joining their new home.

The feeling's mutual for Monty and Justin

Do you remember Justin? When he first started coming to the Donkey Assisted Therapy Centre in Ivybridge, Devon, aged three, he was extremely anxious about every new experience and his reaction was to be constantly sick. Here he is with Monty, another one of our wonderful donkey assisted therapy donkeys who loves being part of the team from riding in the arena to these quieter moments. It really is a mutally beneficial relationship.

Now aged six, Justin is all smiles when he arrives and he really looks forward to his donkey assisted therapy sessions.
