The recent request to export 10,000 live donkeys from Egypt to China which had been approved by a scientific committee has now been stopped by the Egyptian government’s General Organisation of Veterinary Services (GOVS).
The Donkey Sanctuary’s partner in Egypt, ESPWWA (Egyptian Society for the Protection and Welfare or Working Animals) has a strong working relationship with GOVS and they have now agreed that, should requests like this ever be made in the future, GOVS will offer ESPWWA a seat at the discussion table so that donkey welfare is fully represented.
The Donkey Sanctuary has grave concerns about the fast-growing trade and demand of donkey skins to produce the traditional Chinese medicine Ejiao, and the impact this is having on their welfare.
