As one of the tallest donkey in the herd, Alfie is easy to find. In fact, the children adore him for his size and there’s often hot competition over who gets to ride him first.
Alfie loves fellow adoption donkey Benjy and will wait for him whenever he goes out on a visit to a care home or hospice. He’ll then bray a hearty welcome when his little friend returns home and will stay by his side around the paddock and yard. Later on the pair can be found snuggling together when it’s time for sleep.
Alfie is a core member of the riding donkey team as he always knows what to do to help the children. His riding instructors say that he never puts a hoof wrong in the riding arena as there really is nothing that fazes him…except, that is, for the mounting block - steps used by children to get on the donkeys. What’s more, if an unsuspecting instructor or volunteer is leading him around the arena, Alfie has been known to zoom off with them in tow. Hang on!
Like many of his friends at The Donkey Sanctuary Belfast, Alfie has a real understanding of the children’s needs and has been known to put his head in the laps of the youngsters in their wheelchairs. He wins the hearts of all who meet him. Plus he also has beautiful long ears and a soft face, meaning his charms are hard to resist.
Alfie is a very enthusiastic chap who loves trotting around the arena while pulling the cart. When he’s not on duty, Alfie is often found playing in the fields with his friends or rolling in the sand paddock. One of his finest moments has to be when, shortly after arriving at the centre in 2011, he welcomed HRH The Princess Royal during the centre’s official open day.
Alfie absolutely loves carrots and both he and Benjy enjoy getting their occasional ginger nut treats!
