It’s that time of year again where the donkeys are ready to play in the paddocks after being inside for the winter months. The donkeys at Kennel Barn eagerly awaited their turn with excitement (as were the grooms and myself!) they were fully alert and knew something was happening! It’s an exciting time for everyone, the weather improves, the daffodils slowly appear and the donkeys are free to run around on the undisturbed, green fields.
Kennel Barn is now home to 75 adorable donkeys that arrived in our care in January and during their time here they haven’t yet been out on the grass. It’s an impressive, vast building which was once used to store hay and has been temporarily converted to accommodate the large number of donkeys that have been relinquished to our care over the winter months.
As soon as the gates opened, the lively donkeys galloped up the path to Pat’s Paddock. With 10 acres the donkeys have plenty of space to roam and explore. They were in their element; with their ears pricked forward they ran, kicked and frolicked for the whole time I was there. They raced one another up and down the field a number of times, as well as trotting around the perimeter of the paddock.
For this first turnout the donkeys were in the paddock for about an hour and this will be gradually increased over the next few weeks so that their stomachs can get used to the change in diet. I stayed for quite a while, mesmerised by the dramatic scene of this large group of happy donkeys all having such a fantastic time.
