Albania is one of our newest collaborations. Animal Help Albania was founded and run by Maria Christina Medina. Maria has been working to improve the lives of cats and dogs in Albania for many years, by rescuing and rehoming as many as she can. Many of the rehomed animals stay in Albania to be looked after by caring families.
In mid-2015 The Donkey Sanctuary were invited to visit Albania and the rescue centre by Maria, as there is a large working donkey population. At that time Maria had recently rescued two very old ex working donkeys, one was abandoned in the forest nearby waiting for the wolf population to find it and the other was rescued from Tirana Zoo where it was to be killed and fed to the carnivores.
Maria explained that the information on donkeys was non-existent, even in the local vet school. We offered to fund the two donkeys in her care and since then they have been joined by two more rescued donkeys funded by The Donkey Sanctuary.
The most recent rescue case is of Liberty. Liberty was owned by the local gypsy population who left her behind when they moved on as she was unfit to work.
Local passers-by found Liberty in a shocking state and called Animal Help Albania.
When Maria and her team arrived they soon realised that Liberty had been abandoned and cast away as she was past her working sell by date, she was laying on the streets of Tirana amongst the traffic and was completely exhausted. The team managed to load Liberty into the trailer and move her back to the rescue centre were the vet was waiting to give Liberty a full medical check-up.
Liberty has now been at the rescue centre for several days and is making a remarkable recovery and enjoying the care and attention of the dedicated team.
This is where The Donkey Sanctuary can really make a difference in by funding the work of projects like Animal Help Albania.
