Situated near Buxton, our Derbyshire sanctuary covers almost 30 acres and is open to visitors five times a year between May and September.

Join us for our open day and meet our staff and volunteers while getting ‘hands on’ with the donkeys. The donkeys enjoy all the extra fuss and attention and it’s a lovely day for all.

We are currently offering time slots through our booking system for either a morning or afternoon booking. Our morning booking runs from 10am – 12:30pm and our afternoon booking runs from 1pm – 3pm.

What to expect

Take the time to explore our Derbyshire sanctuary while you meet our resident donkey herds.

Our staff and volunteers will be on hand to talk about the donkeys, and visitors will have the chance to see the different areas in which the donkeys live, learn about how we care for them, discover the dynamics of the herd and get answers to all questions that they may have about our donkeys.

Gifts

A selection of our own Donkey World products will be available to purchase on-site. We accept both cash and card payments for these items.

Handmade gifts and souvenirs will also be available through our volunteer fundraising group Friends of Buxton Donkeys, with all proceeds going to The Donkey Sanctuary. Please note that the Friends of Buxton Donkeys can only accept cash.

Accessibility

We are a working farm and many of our walkways are grass which can be uneven. We appreciate that these walkways may not be easily accessible for some visitors. For any specific questions about disabled accessibility, please contact us for more information.

Please dress appropriately and bring suitable footwear for the weather.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads.

Booking online

Due to the popularity of our open days, we have a booking system to help us monitor booked visitor numbers, and to assist with contacting visitors in the event of any changes to the planned event.

We are currently offering time slots through our booking system for either a morning or afternoon booking. Our morning booking runs from 10am – 12:30pm and our afternoon booking runs from 1pm – 3pm. Please do not make repeat bookings covering both the morning and afternoon slots on the same day.

Frequently asked questions

  • Booking and entrance into our Derbyshire centre is free of charge. As our charity relies purely on the generosity of the public, you are more than welcome to make a donation at the time of booking or contribute a donation while you are visiting.

  • Please be aware that the number of bookings is limited. To ensure that the booking system remains fair and that everyone gets a chance to see our lovely donkeys, please do not make repeat bookings covering two slots on the same day.

  • Children five years and over will need to be included in the booking. Children under five do not require a booking. Children over the age of twelve can be booked as an adult.

  • If you are not able to join us for our Open Day, please use the link in your confirmation email to cancel your booking. As you will appreciate, bookings to visit our donkeys are in high demand, so by cancelling a booking you cannot attend, you are freeing up this space for other supporters.

  • We have allocated morning and afternoon time slots which allow plenty of time for visitors to explore the site, see the donkeys and enjoy refreshments if they wish. We ask visitors to arrive no more than 15 minutes before their booked time to allow for entrance and parking, and to leave promptly at the end of your booking.
