The Donkey Sanctuary is now welcoming consortia applications to co-design and implement a 24-month One Welfare project in Nepal.

The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare organisation that aims to transform the lives of donkeys and mules and support the people who depend on them for their livelihoods.

Nepal’s recent history of severe natural disasters and an ongoing economic crisis, exacerbated by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, has escalated welfare challenges for working donkeys and mules and the communities who rely on them.

We believe that welfare changes for working equines are dependent on human labour and the environment. Therefore, we have developed this new funding opportunity to drive momentum behind a ‘One Welfare’ approach to working in Nepal.

The Nepal One Welfare Fund has been created to support consortia applications of two or more organisations, led by a nominated lead agent, who can address welfare challenges for all three target areas: animal welfare, human development and environmental conservation.

Selected consortia will then join efforts with The Donkey Sanctuary to co-design and implement a 24-month One Welfare project in Nepal, with funding available of up to £150,000.

If you are interested in applying, please read our call for applications for full details of the process and eligibility criteria, and the Submission Guidance which will assist you in preparation for your consortia application.

Application process

Once you have reviewed the Submission Guidance and our Frequently Asked Questions and can confirm that your organisation, or all members of the consortium you are part of, qualify for the Nepal One Welfare Fund, the application process has two separate semi-independent stages.

Stage 1: Registering your interest

This stage is not mandatory.

This stage is designed only for those organisations that are not yet part of a consortium but have the experience and expertise to deliver one or two elements of the One Welfare approach and would like support to be put in contact with other organisations to explore the possibility of forming a consortium.

If you have formed a consortium already, you do not need to register your interest and are welcome to proceed straight to Stage 2.

Stage 2: Submitting a concept note

At this stage, we request a concept note to explain the viability of the consortia and how you intend to structure your programme of work.

Interested consortia are welcome to complete the application form by 23:59 BST on 4 June 2023. Both successful and unsuccessful candidates will be informed of the results by 7 July 2023.
