Situated within the grounds of The Donkey Sanctuary, our Centre in Sidmouth was opened on Saturday 5th December 1978 by the Marquess of Bath. It was a memorable day as this was the first EST centre ever to be built, bringing a new concept to local planning offices and costing over £70,000 at the time.
Over 100 children with special needs and disabilities from 20 local schools in the surrounding areas benefit from donkey-riding therapy at this Centre each week.
Louise Blair is one of the riding instructors at this Centre. She explains how children can make real progress even in a short amount of time.
"One little boy who has epilepsy, is deaf and wheelchair-bound has made great progress in the last few months. When he started coming to our centre, he would only be able to sit on the donkey for five minutes at the most. After this time, he would simply have had enough. Now, he can sit up, strong and proud for the whole riding session and even holds the reins for limited periods. His posture and balance have really come on. He has also begun to take a real interest in his surroundings."
