Two donkeys who were relinquished separately into our care have now found friendship together at our one of our farms in Sidmouth, Devon.

Mediterranean miniature donkey Pedro lived in a loving home without a companion, but his owner relinquished the stallion into our care to give him a secure future with other donkeys.

Another donkey called George also lived in a private home with his donkey friend Elvis. The pair spent many happy years together, until Elvis sadly passed away last year.

Shortly after losing Elvis, the family suffered their own bereavement, which meant that they needed to sell the land where George had lived with Elvis.

The family knew they needed to find George a new friend but were unable to find a suitable home locally, so they reached out to us for help.

Not long after arriving at our New Arrivals Unit in Sidmouth, grooms noticed that Pedro and George were starting to form a new friendship together.

That bond continued to develop, and the donkeys have since moved just a short distance to Woods Farm, where they have made a lasting impression with the team of grooms who care for them.

Jen Littley, one of the grooms who looks after Pedro and George at Woods Farm, said: “Pedro may be small in stature, but he’s got a huge character. He enjoys searching out the enrichment treats that we leave for him to find. He also really loves a good scratch, and will stand completely still, mesmerised by the scratching until we stop.

“We call George ‘Gorgeous George’, as he is such a gentle donkey. He too loves to be groomed and is a big hit with two of our Quality Time Volunteers, Bill and Jean.”

After coming into our care as single donkeys, Pedro and George have not only found their forever home, but they have also found a lasting friendship in each other’s company.
