Viv is one of our devoted team of volunteers who spends two hours a week at Woods Farm near Sidmouth in Devon, providing vital one to one attention, grooming and care to our special group of older donkeys.
Viv has long been an animal lover and used to visit The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth when she was younger. She decided to take the opportunity to volunteer with us when she retired from nursing and moved to Sidmouth a few years ago. "I feel very uplifted being with them," she says, "The funny things they do make me laugh, and I love paying them extra attention, getting to know them as individuals and keeping an eye on their general health and wellbeing, reporting anything untoward to the grooms."
Volunteer work with the donkeys is a truly uplifting experience.
An Accident and Emergency nurse for many years, Viv loves her time with the donkeys, "It is very rewarding when new donkeys are added to the group, they are often initially scared and run away from everyone. As time goes by, we gain their confidence, and the donkeys become curious. Finally they cautiously approach us, and then it is wonderful when they eventually come for a cuddle! The donkeys always make me smile."
