Last week we were delighted to spend an evening in the company of hundreds of committed animal lovers to celebrate the 2016 Daily Mirror and RSPCA Animal Hero Awards. The sparkling evening at the Grosvenor Hotel in London was presented by Amanda Holden and attended by special guests such as Dr Brian May, Paul O’Grady, Alesha Dixon, Tom Fletcher and Peter Egan.
Jaffa was a finalist in the category of Rescue Animal of the Year and, although he didn’t win the overall award, it was an enormous honour to be invited to the event. His story of being abandoned in Ireland with overgrown feet, his troubled recovery and subsequent rehoming with Mary is inspirational in itself, but Jaffa has gone on to become a central focus of his community as groups of children and young adults with additional needs visit him for grooming sessions and then there’s also the now-famous occasion where he foiled a burglary. Yes, a rescued, recovered, loving, crime-stopping donkey.
Sadly Jaffa wasn’t able to attend the awards in person but was represented by his Guardian Mary who is well known to many of us here at The Donkey Sanctuary from her visits to Donkey Week and the wonderful fundraising activities and events she holds throughout the year.
Our sincere congratulations to all the winners and finalists and to all who work so hard to support and help the lives of animals.
