The team at our donkey assisted therapy centre in Sidmouth were delighted to receive a festive gift from supporter Monica who sent around 50 bags of delicious home-grown walnuts from her garden in France to be sold at the centre to raise funds. This is the third year the walnuts have been donated and Monica also uses her creative skills to the full by making hand-painted wooden trinket cases and coasters throughout the year that she then donates to us.
Monica has been a dedicated supporter of The Donkey Sanctuary since moving to France and raised nearly £3000 by completing the Virgin London Marathon in 2013. She moved to France five and a half years ago and has had a passion for donkeys after getting her first donkey, Bonnie, in January 2010. It wasn’t the easiest start as Bonnie was not interested in loading into the transport provided, preferring to walk a mile in the snow with Monica to her new home.
Bonnie’s companion, Alice (17), also needed a good home and came from Nantes, which is a three hour trip… by trailer! The two donkeys are doing well together and still deciding who the boss is.
Monica said: “Learning how to care for donkeys has been a bit of a rollercoaster but because we get so much help from the Sanctuary, from the vets about welfare advice, and from Ben Hart about behavior we just want to give something back. The work that everyone at the Sanctuary does is fantastic, and it’s my way of saying thank you to them and to do my bit for donkeys in need of help, and to support the work of all parts of the Sanctuary.”
It’s fantastic to receive such wonderful support from Monica and we’re really grateful to her for her passion and commitment.
