One of our foster homes has let us know how our donkeys are bringing light into the lives of those around them. Joey and Shankydd appeared this summer on The Paul O’Grady Show looking for a home. Since then they have been helping children experience the outdoors and visiting elderly residents in care homes. They’ve been a huge hit.
“The magic has started”, writes foster owner Wendy after the donkeys’ first visit to a care home.
“It was the end of their harvest festival service and they were gently singing ‘Little Donkey’ with much delight as we edged into the room.
“One gentleman’s whole demeanour gradually changed as he realised Shankydd was beside his chair and he could reach out and touch him, scratch his furry back and gently communicate; this lovely man was crying with joy as we left.
“Another lady, asleep at first, sprang up to place both hands on his sides, walk along delighted then remembered she wasn’t very steady and sat back down again in an adjacent chair, all smiles!”
These donkey heroes have also been used with scout groups, children’s parties and are being trained for Christmas services and for driving.
We knew the boys were star performers when they trotted onto the stage at the TV studio without a second glance and absorbed the attention of adoring fans and they haven’t let us down. What heroes!
We are delighted the boys’ journey has worked out so well with so many benefits for the community.
