We were touched to receive a letter from Mark Gould enclosing a donation for £320 given in memory of his late mother Joan who had supported our work for many years.
My mother loved all animals and as a result she supported several animal charities. She never told me why she donated to The Donkey Sanctuary, but she was upset by the way donkeys are, in many parts of the world, used without any regard to their welfare. She hated the thought of any animal being mistreated. She was always a very caring person and donkeys seem to have a certain innocence and charm, so it was completely in character for her to want to do something positive to help the poor helpless creatures.
She may have encountered donkeys during the Second World War, when she moved to Bridgenorth with her mother to live on a farm owned by relatives; or it could have been on one of her trips abroad that she saw donkeys being mistreated; or it could have just been something she saw on TV. Whatever it was, The Donkey Sanctuary was the one she supported for longer that all the others, so they must have been particularly special to her.
In memory of
Joan Gould 1936-2014.
Loved and missed by
many family and friends.
We all love you and
will never forget you.
She would be happy to have a donation to one of her charities rather than a Christmas or birthday present, so she would have been pleased that we had a collection for her beloved animals, rather than waste (as she would have seen it) money on flowers for her funeral.
On her behalf - thank you for the work you do.
Our thanks go out to all the kind contributors for remembering Joan in this way. Gifts like this allow us to continue our work as well as provide a lasting tribute to Joan.
