In April 2012 our project team in The Gambia was approached by a man with three donkeys. They had not worked for several months due to harness wounds and were suffering badly. The knock on effect for the family was a severe impact on their income and well-being.
It was clear that the team had quite a task ahead of them to create a long term solution tackling the injuries and pain of the donkeys and addressing the misunderstanding of the owner and his family about donkey behaviour.
Over a period fo 18 months the team provided treatment for the three donkeys, giving them relief from their injuries and helping the family develop compassion and empathy for these beautiful animals.
Project manager, Jacci Jaques, said "It has cost very little to get the donkeys well and working again through some new harness materials and veterinary treatment, but it has taken time and effort working with this family to create a happy working relationship and a really good future for the donkeys - one we hope this owner will share with others too.
Our teams have been working in The Gambia since 2011 in partnership with All About Animals and The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust helping to alleviate the suffering of donkeys and mules through education and training and veterinary services.
The project costs approximately £5,000 each year and includes owner workshops and healthcare treatment for the donkeys.
