Fred was overweight when he arrived into the care of the Sanctuary in 2006.
He spent almost 30 wonderful years with his owners, Dorothy and Tony, who loved him very much. They even played games with him like hide and seek; Tony would hide behind the hedge and Fred would always come to find him!
Dorothy and Tony had a two-acre paddock with a specially-built stable in one corner. Unfortunately, Fred's paddock was not close to the house but near to the main road and 'passers by' would give him treats and he would nibble on all that he could.
Tony says: "Fred is really cheeky and loves to eat anything and everything. With all the extra treats he was given he soon started to put on the extra pounds."
Being overweight can have a detrimental affect on a donkey's life and Dorothy and Tony were so concerned by the number of people feeding him that they relinquished Fred to the Sanctuary.
Because we have a team of five vets and have been running for almost forty years, Dorothy and Tony knew Fred would be going to a good home where his weight would be monitored.
Today, Fred looks great and Dorothy and Tony regularly visit him with a couple of carrots for a special treat.
