We are very fortunate to have work experience student Lilly with us this week. She's been a great help in the PR Office and has written this lovely article about her visit to meet our gorgeous Poitou donkeys.
Hi I’m Lilly, and I have been spending the week at the PR office for my work experience.
You wouldn’t think that the tall, thick furred Poitou donkeys were any relation to the many other donkeys you see here at the Sanctuary, but they are actually a breed of donkey from France, named after the region they come from.
This particular Poitou, Dartanyan, is a 3 year old gelding. I have never seen a donkey this big before, and being right next to one was quite daunting. But after some time of gaining Dartanyan’s trust, he became comfortable with my close presence, and his calmness then put me at ease.
Being with them on such a hot day gives me an insight into how warm they must get with the thick coat they are blessed with. Although in the winter this must be a great asset, in this heat wave we are having they are probably the only ones not soaking up the sun whilst they can! Their grooms make sure they have plenty of shade and water to keep them cool and comfortable.
As my work experience is coming to an end, I’m glad that I got the chance to visit these wonderful donkeys that I didn’t even know lived at The Donkey Sanctuary before today! I thoroughly suggest that you find the time to visit them and fall in love with these gentle giants.
Thanks for all your help Lilly.
