The 10th of July marked a very special date this year, it was the day our Sanctuary in Spain, El Refugio del Burrito, celebrated its 10th Birthday. 300 guests and staff enjoyed the jam-packed day and evening entertainment from the Flamenco dancers dressed in their vibrant frilly attire, and the singers who encouraged the visitors to sing along to their festive songs until 3am the following day!
Whilst the guests enjoyed the BBQ and raffle, the staff were seen showing off their talent with a theatre performance from Celia Rangel (Office Manager) and Rafael Benjumea (PR Officer). The children enjoyed a variety of activities and of course meeting the most important residents of El Refugio... the donkeys.
El Refugio was completed in 2003, giving permanent refuge to any donkey or mule in need of sanctuary. In 2007, donkey assisted riding therapy was introduced in Fuente, the main base. It then moved to Córdoba Zoo in 2008. El Refugio helps 260 children a week using 5 caring and patient donkeys. Thanks to the 28 staff and the volunteers, El Refugio has given sanctuary to 530 donkeys since it was established. At this present time, 227 donkeys enjoy the shelter and security of El Refugio del Burrito.
The decade of hard work and dedication from the staff, volunteers and supporters at El Refugio has shown its popularity and reputation by having a whopping 35,000 Facebook followers.
We’d just like to say a big ‘Cumpleanos Feliz!’ to El Refugio del Burrito. Happy Birthday!
