On 18th March 2013, The Donkey Sanctuary was pleased to welcome some very lovely visitors; The Orchard Woodpeckers.
The Orchard Woodpeckers are a group of people with learning difficulties who have set up a small craft enterprise making and selling their work. Because of their love of animals and donkeys in particular, Visitors' Centre Manager Dean Hancock arranged for the Orchard Woodpeckers to have a grooming session with some of our wonderful donkeys.
The group consists of Deana, John, Lucy, Peter, Stuart, Roy, Lucy, Jemma (who unfortunately wasn’t able to make it, but hopes to next time!) and Heather. Heather was really motivated to paint some pictures of when she was grooming the donkeys; she is partially sighted so it was an amazing achievement for her. The group has also come up with creative donkey items such as their unique glass donkey window hangings which are currently for sale in our Visitors’ Centre, and they are also thinking of new donkey ideas… watch this space.
The Orchard Woodpeckers thoroughly enjoyed their experience at The Donkey Sanctuary and were inspired by their visit.
Janet, Co-ordinator of the centre where the Orchard Woodpeckers work says: “This work is giving them self confidence and self esteem which is so important for people who have learning difficulties. I am really proud of them.”
The donkeys at Shelter One loved meeting the group and they certainly had some extra cuddles that day.
