Donkey Sanctuary vets Roxana and Raul heard of a local man who wanted to talk about whether we could help with his donkey, a lovely and gentle mare called Puica.
Puica had lived with her owner since she was a foal, working bringing hay for pigs and as general transport for the family. She was now struggling to pull a cart and showing signs of age and ill-health, her feet were long and she had been losing weight.
Her owner advised that he had been offered €150 for Puica and the cart but knew that she would have been taken to slaughter for the meat industry. He explained that even though he needed the money (€150 is more than one week’s average wage in Romania, with wages in rural areas substantially lower), he loves his donkey. He had owned Puica since his children were young and she had been part of the family. He was happy to hear about our Romanian Sanctuary and that Puica would have a safe and secure future.
Puica arrived at our Sanctuary on the same day as Vasile and the two are settling in to their new home together.
