One of the most popular residents at our Romanian Sanctuary is a lovely little donkey called Pipo. He had been abandoned in a sewer in a busy part of Bucharest and was starving and in a great deal of pain from his extremely overgrown hooves. Our team brought him to the Cernavoda Sanctuary for intensive remedial farriery.
His hoof problems were so severe that it caused lasting damage to his pedal bone meaning that it is not possible to make his hooves evenly balanced and he takes medication every day to manage the pain. Vet Roxana gives him thorough examinations to check that he is still happy and monitor his quality of life and comfort.
Roxana says: “When he first came in, his whole demeanor was that of a donkey in pain. You could see on his face that he was exhausted and had been through a terrible experience, like he just wanted it to be over; just wanted the pain to go away. We take extra care of him to make sure he is happy and comfortable. He is having a lovely, safe retirement here. After all he’s been through, he deserves it.”
Pipo is a very happy member of the group and gets on well with staff and donkeys alike.
