The first donkey to ever arrive at our Romanian Sanctuary is a lovely brown donkey called Rigoletto – his collar proudly displays his intake number 1.
Rigoletto was part of a travelling circus where we believe he gave rides around the big top for circus visitors. As Rigoletto got older, he started to develop arthritis which meant that he could no longer work. One day, the circus left town without him, abandoning him tethered in a field.
With nobody to claim him, he was about to be taken for slaughter for the meat industry when The Donkey Sanctuary stepped in to save him. Rigoletto was brought to our base where he could receive veterinary treatment and a safe home for the rest of his life. Rigoletto is kept comfortable with medication and is very happy with his friend Pipo.
Since Rigoletto arrived in 2007, our Romanian Sanctuary has grown to providing sanctuary to 60 rescued donkeys and a mobile clinic which treats working donkeys within a 100km radius of the Sanctuary.
