Holly was part of a group of five donkeys rescued from a notorious horse market in Northern Ireland in December 2009. Our local Welfare Officer who was in attendance was so appalled by the poor condition of the animals that she immediately arranged for a Vet to examine them and one was in such poor health he sadly later died.
The other donkeys were given essential expert veterinary care and were seized by Omagh Police who had the difficult task of tracing the owner who had mysteriously disappeared from the market! The owner was eventually found and reluctantly signed over the remaining four to The Donkey Sanctuary at the beginning of January 2010. The group were taken to our holding base in Strabane where they were given a thorough medical, as well as lots of love and attention to help them recover from their traumatic ordeal.
Holly is only 1 year of age and we are hopeful her troubled start should not affect her long term happiness under the care of The Donkey Sanctuary. It was during her stay at the holding base where Holly met a kindred spirit in a new special friend called Julie. Julie had been bred by her previous owner who signed Julie over to the Sanctuary and she had been separated from her foal. Julie also needed extra love and care to ease her loss and settle into new surroundings. Holly and Julie get on very well and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company.
We were delighted when both Holly and Julie were jointly selected for the foster scheme to receive individual love and attention from dedicated foster owners in Northern Ireland, where we hope they will spend many happy years together.
The numbers of abandoned and neglected donkeys in Northern Ireland is growing at a rapid pace and The Donkey Sanctuary has a team of Welfare Officers in the area who are working tirelessly on their behalf. With your help, we would love to give many more a happy ending in loving foster homes, just like Holly and Julie.
