Poor Roger was only 6 months old when he was relinquished to the Sanctuary in April 2007 following police intervention. Unbelievably his drug dealer owners won Roger in a pub quiz and had kept him in a tiny back garden. As if this wasn’t traumatic enough for this little foal, horrendously he was ridden through the streets during drunken bouts where louts found warped entertainment in throwing bottles at him. It really was beyond belief and he had to be saved.
Neighbours couldn’t believe what they were seeing and we are so grateful that they telephoned The Donkey Sanctuary to share their concerns. Our Regional Welfare Officer immediately stepped in and accompanied by the police, he removed Roger for his own protection. Roger was taken to the safety of our local holding base and even with much love and care from our devoted staff, it took some time before he felt settled and had overcome the shock of his torment.
Elijah and Jacob had been callously dumped by a cold hearted horse dealer and were picked up by another equine animal sanctuary; however they were already full and struggled to accommodate them so they contacted the Donkey Sanctuary. As with Roger, Elijah and Jacob initially went to our local holding base and subsequently all three then travelled to Devon where they spent their days quietly roaming the fields and barns in a friendly resident group.
Over time, the grooms noticed that Roger, Elijah and Jacob had become a closely bonded trio and as they are such lovely donkeys with fantastic temperaments we felt they should go to a very special foster home where they would receive the one to one attention they so enjoy.
In October this year that dream became a reality when they found the perfect home in Essex with a huge well bedded shelter and we are pleased to report they have settled in beautifully! All three are now thriving despite the trauma of their early years and will now spend the rest of their days free from harm and we think they truly deserve it!
