Some of you who have visited Blackpool over the years, may recognise these lovely donkeys as they used to work on the sands. The Clews family is one of the best beach donkey operators in the UK and has been retiring their donkeys to us for literally "donkeys' years".
We now have a large number of 'Clews' donkeys at the Sanctuary and pictured here are four of them getting into the Christmas spirit!
From left to right are: Pru, Pumpkin, Blue Rose and Teddy with their groom, Kelly Ryder, dressed up as Santa Claus. All four donkeys are living happily at Paccombe Farm with five others from the Clews family.
Pru (now aged 21) came into the Sanctuary in 2005 and featured in one of our newsletters after she became ill and started to go downhill fast to the point of refusing to eat. Knowing that her previous owners would be concerned, one of our vets, Elena Barrio, rang Mrs Clews to tell her the situation, and to see if she had any suggestions. Elena was told that Pru used to love drinking coca cola, which had to be in the bottle rather than in a bucket! A bottle of her favourite tipple was produced straight away, and Pru's condition immediately started to improve. Pru was gradually weaned off coca cola, as this is not something we would normally recommend as part of a donkey's diet!
Teddy (now aged 26) came into the Sanctuary in 2007 and recently Pumpkin (aged 17) and Blue Rose (aged 15) joined the donkey family in August of this year.
