The Donkey Sanctuary has been chosen as the charity of the year by Pets at Home pet store in Marsh Barton, Exeter.
The store will be running fundraising events for the animal welfare charity including sponsored ‘member of staff in a crate for a day’ events, fancy dress days, and bake sales and other creative fundraising ideas the staff came up with.
Shop manager Matthew Ledgerwood-Barr said the pet shop chose The Donkey Sanctuary because many of the staff have links with the Sanctuary and it is a charity close to their hearts.
He said: “My mum had adopted the donkey Tapestry from the Sanctuary and I always remember her picture up on the wall. And other members of staff have adopted donkeys and a lot of us go and visit quite often. So when it came to choosing a charity of the year The Donkey Sanctuary was an obvious choice and a worthwhile cause.”
The shop is well on its way to its fundraising target of £3000 for the year which will be split between The Donkey Sanctuary and Boxer Rescue. All funds received by The Donkey Sanctuary will support its diverse projects in the UK and around the world.
Emily Morris, Community Fundraiser for The Donkey Sanctuary, took donkey Trix to meet the staff at Pets at Home.
She said: “Its great that Pets at Home have chosen us as one of their charities of the year. We’re really grateful to them for their passion and commitment and its brilliant to work with fellow animal lovers who share the same goal of improving animal welfare.”
She added: “We would also love to hear from other organisations or individuals who would like to fundraise for us. Our dedicated team would be excited to hear your ideas, whether its running a marathon, climbing a mountain or baking a mountain of cakes, and see how we can support you!”
