For those looking for the ideal place to take their special mums this Mother’s Day, the Sidmouth-based Donkey Sanctuary has all the ingredients for a perfect day.
With definite signs of spring arriving, the beautiful countryside setting of The Donkey Sanctuary is a superb venue for celebrating Mother’s Day this year. From spending time with the donkeys to enjoying a well-deserved cup of tea or tasty lunch in the restaurant, hard-working mums are sure to appreciate a day of fun at the Sanctuary.
Things to do this Mother’s Day at The Donkey Sanctuary:
• Visit Flora and her foal Zena at Shelter 2. Flora arrived into our care already in-foal in July last year and Zena was born prematurely in September, with a serious leg condition that left her unable to stand. Zena was given round the clock support from Sanctuary staff until she was able to get to her feet and independently suckle from Flora, and now both mother and daughter are thriving in their new home at Shelter 2.
• Take a springtime stroll around the Sanctuary. There are 10 walks that circle the beautiful Devon countryside where you can meet the donkeys and admire this year’s newly blooming daffodils. Visitor walk guides are available at the Visitors’ Centre.
• Stop for a coffee and mouth-watering cake or delicious lunch in the Hayloft restaurant. With a tasty café-style lunch menu featuring meals freshly prepared to order using, where possible, seasonal and local ingredients. The former barn for donkeys has been superbly renovated into a rustic and relaxing restaurant with windows overlooking the donkeys in the Main Yard.
• Find the perfect gift. Adopting one of the adorable donkeys from The Donkey Sanctuary’s sister charity the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust helps to fund donkey riding therapy sessions for local children with additional needs and disabilities. Information about adopting a donkey is available from the Visitors’ Centre.
The Donkey Sanctuary is open 365 days a year from 9.00am until dusk with free admission and parking.
