A newlywed couple from March in Cambridgeshire made a special visit to the Sidmouth-based Donkey Sanctuary yesterday to hand over a donation of almost £400 to help donkeys worldwide.
Alison Hooper and Sampsa Leather, who married in Andover on Friday 5th June and are now on honeymoon in Devon, requested their family and friends give a donation to the donkeys in lieu of any wedding gifts; they collected an admirable £398.50 for the charity.
Alison and Sampsa told the Sanctuary: "We decided to donate the money to the Sanctuary because donkeys are nice, they don't get as much coverage as other animals, and they need our help. We couldn't think of a better reason why not."
The couple presented their cheque to Dawn Vincent, the Sanctuary's Senior PR Officer, who says: "Alison and Sampsa have made a very kind gesture, and we would also like to thank their wedding guests who donated so generously. £400 is a great deal of money and will be put to very good use in helping to care, protect and rescue donkeys around the world. Thank you."
In these difficult economic times, the charity is not alone in feeling the financial squeeze and is affected by the increase in donkeys being relinquished into its care each month because their owners can no longer afford to keep their well-loved donkeys. Any donation, no matter how small, is always gratefully received. For further information about The Donkey Sanctuary call 01395 578222.
