Over the past week we’ve been itching to tell you the news, and now we can. We have three gorgeous new donkeys just waiting to be adopted. Gareth, Ashley and Ruby have joined the adoption scheme and we think you’ll be smitten by their fun-loving, affectionate personalities.
Be warned: it may take some time selecting which one to adopt, since they are all so different in their own special ways.
Gareth is the smallest of the three, but despite his petite size, he’s still earned the reputation for being the king of the herd! Nothing is sweeter than seeing little Gareth acting like a true leader, with all the other donkeys in tow. He can often be seen tearing around the paddock with his best friend Benji. But most of all, he loves spending time with humans, and the more attention he gets, the better.
It’s not obvious from the photos, but Gareth has a cataract in his right eye. Being the resilient little fellow that he is, he doesn’t let it get the better of him and we make sure he gets the care needed. When he first arrived, it took a while to get him used to being handled and groomed, but after a bit of practice, patience and persuasion, he now loves being groomed, and even enjoys his visits from the farrier.
Next to be introduced is Ashley, another remarkable boy who had to overcome terrific odds. Ashley came into our lives in 2009, when he was born right here at the Sidmouth Sanctuary. With his fluffy coat and tiny features, he was our little bundle of joy. Tragically, his mother died during the birth and Ashley was left orphaned. As our supporters will know, we have a no breeding policy here at the Sanctuary but his mother was already in foal when she came into our care. Unable to find a suitable foster mare for Ashley, we had the privilege of bottle feeding him by hand. With the help of a rota, and under the direction of the onsite veterinary team, he was bottle-fed for a little while.
Ashley went from strength to strength and is now a happy, fun-loving chap who wins the hearts of everyone he meets. Having been introduced to two other foals during his early days, it’s little surprise that Ashley still remains the best of friends with them. In fact, Ashley, Mr Khan and Zena can often be found playing chase in the paddock together. When it comes to grooming time (possibly Ashley’s favourite part of the day) Ashley has also been known to pick up a brush and start grooming Mr Khan as well. What a funny boy!
Ruby is known for her larger-than-life character. She loves to be noticed and will often get up to amusing escapades just to get our attention. She is an extremely intelligent donkey, who never ceases to amaze us with her funny ways. Whether it’s dumping an empty bucket at your feet to ask for a feed or sidling up to you and resting her muzzle on your shoulder, Ruby is one adorable and unique character. Unlocking door bolts is one of her particular specialities but while she may have a mischievous streak her affectionate nature means she is quickly forgiven, and who could resist those long ears!
Ruby hails from Blackpool and having been hand-reared by her previous owners, after her mother rejected her, Ruby has a particular affinity to humans and loves to make her presence felt. Perhaps this is why she thinks she deserves the most attention on the yard!
All this week, we will be unveiling more information about our new adoption donkeys, as well as revealing exclusive behind the scenes footage and hosting a special Q&A session on Facebook, so you can learn more about these latest additions to our adoption scheme.
