Eugene “Oggie” Winters from Portstewart, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, has raised £520 running four marathons over one weekend in February. He sponsored himself £5 per mile to raise funds for animals in need and visited The Donkey Sanctuary to hand over his donation.
Oggie, as he is known to fellow runners, took on his 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th marathon of 2016 which brings his marathon total up to 171. A ‘three-marathons-in-two-days’ event was not enough for Oggie and so he signed up to another event which occurred on the Friday in County Mayo, continuing over the weekend to complete all four. This all forms part of his personal challenge to run 200 marathons before he is 60, having only started at 55 with only the aim to lose weight, it seems he will reach his target number well before his 60th!
At 58, Oggie decided that now was the right time to give a little back to the donkeys which he has loved since working on farms when he was younger.
Kirsty Christmas, Community Fundraising Manager for The Donkey Sanctuary says “Oggie has achieved a fantastic goal, which is one I’m sure everyone will admire. We appreciate his enthusiasm and accomplishments this year and all the money donated will allow us to continue caring for donkeys and mules in need. We are grateful for his donation and wish him luck for his future running challenges.”
Oggie visited The Donkey Sanctuary in Templepatrick, Belfast centre since completing his challenge to show his continued support for the charity and was inspired by the charity’s Donkey Assisted Interaction work for children with additional needs.
