Just four miles from our Sidmouth Sanctuary, nestled in beautiful Devon countryside, is Woods Farm, home to almost 600 of our rescued donkeys.
The farm has its fair share of donkeys at the moment, so the staff and volunteers certainly have their hands full!
We thought you might like to meet a few of the amazing characters we have here…
Say hello to seven very special donkeys — Doc, Happy, Sleepy, Dopey, Grumpy, Bashful and Sneezy — who all live up to their namesakes!
Happy is outgoing and friendly. Doc is most certainly the leader of the gang. Dopey is … well, a bit clumsy. His right ear has a slight kink in it, but no one is sure how this came to be.
All seven were rescued in Ireland, after being abandoned in an old quarry and left to fend for themselves.
When they first arrived in our care they were all small and very underweight. Soon they started to thrive and all of them grew, and grew… Now they tower well above the rest of the herd!
It is wonderful to watch them lead the charge out to the field and gallop around together. Despite their size they look out for the other donkeys, especially the miniatures, Chip, Spud and Wedge, whose small size doesn’t stop them joining in the antics of the bigger boys.

It is a delight to see this group of geldings all happily playing, rolling, bucking, rearing and zooming around together.
Amongst all the high jinks there is one donkey who you can guarantee will be right by your side.
Sweet little Robin is constantly on the lookout for attention, nuzzling your arm with his irresistibly soft nose.
When Robin first came to Woods, he was ever so nervous, and very afraid of being touched. Lots of time, patience and love has totally changed Robin’s personality, and instead of shying away he now wants to be friends with everybody.
Woods Farm is not usually open to visitors. However, during Donkey Week there is an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the farm and meet the donkeys.
