The Donkey Sanctuary has been commended by HRH The Princess Royal for its inspirational commitment to the learning and development of its staff for the second time.

We’re among 48 UK organisations and businesses that have been commended by the 2018 Princess Royal Training Awards, joining the likes of John Lewis Partnership, GlaxoSmithKline and the Royal Air Force.

The Award recipients, who were all subject to a rigorous assessment process, will receive awards from HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony at St James’s Palace in London on Wednesday 31 October.

We've initiated a strengths-based development strategy and use a talent map and skills analysis to pinpoint individual learning needs to develop our staff. This resulted in a significant increase in internal promotions in 2017.

Steven James, learning and development manager says: “We are delighted to receive the award for a second time. It demonstrates our commitment to providing development for our staff and reinforces our credentials as an employer of choice.”

The Princess Royal Training Awards, delivered by the City & Guilds Group, are now in their third year. Each of the 90 applications were assessed against three Hallmarks of Excellence by the Princess Royal Training Awards Commission, which comprised of HRH The Princess Royal and seven leading figures in the business and training community.

Commenting on this year’s recipients, Chris Jones, chief executive of the City & Guilds Group said: “Congratulations to all 48 organisations who have achieved the Princess Royal Training Awards standard of excellence this year. Once again, it is evidence of the very real benefits that investing in staff development can bring to employers, large and small, private, public and not for profit.”

Chris continued: “At a time of increasing economic uncertainty and reduced investment into workforce development it is great to see critical business issues being addressed through impactful learning and development. Through the Awards we highlight excellent examples of training that have already proved to be effective and we encourage others to build on their success.”

We employ over 600 staff in the UK with 523 based in the South West. Roles range from grooms to vets, scientists to researchers, chefs to fundraisers and electricians to fabricators. We also fund over 220 roles internationally, in countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico, India and Kenya.
