As a result of a recent BBC Magazine Report, The Donkey Sanctuary has been made aware of a situation in Eastern Turkey in which there appears to be clear evidence showing that the authorities are killing and wounding mules used by smugglers to transport their contraband in the Kurdish region of both Turkey and Iraq.
Without going into too much detail, as the report is harrowing, whilst we appreciate the difficult circumstances in which the Turkish authorities are working, we believe that there is no need to inflict this level of suffering on the loyal and innocent mules.
Please rest assured though that The Donkey Sanctuary is working alongside colleagues at Eurogroup for Animals to apply pressure on both the Turkish government, who are confirmed candidates for accession into the EU, and the European Commission to ensure that this needless suffering is stopped immediately. In the meantime, if you would like to take positive action yourself, please voice your concerns to your local Member of the European Parliament.
