On Monday 9 February 2015, The Donkey Sanctuary lost a very special little donkey. Adoption donkey, Star, aged 17, collapsed and died suddenly after suffering an acute abdominal crisis. He was surrounded by our vet team and his loving grooms who all rushed to his aid, and his mum and constant companion, Twiggy, was at his side.
It is a devastating loss to those who cared for him, from the staff to our wonderful family of adopters who followed his daily exploits through one of the webcams and often sent messages of love and support for our dear little miniature.
Star’s groom, Emma, pays a fitting tribute: “Star was always the cheekiest out of the little family of four miniature donkeys. He was interested in everything going on and often tried to get everywhere he shouldn't. He was so adorable and if you had a bad day, you could go in the barn and bend down to say ‘hi’ to him and he'd rest his head on your shoulder and give you a nuzzle. That would really brighten your day!
“Star was never far away from his mum Twiggy and the rest of the gang. They were always a very close little family. Star has been on many mini adventures with us and will be missed by all who met this wonderful little guy.”

Always in our hearts
We have set up a JustGiving in memory page. By donating today you can help our team continue their invaluable work helping to look after donkeys in our care.
We can only continue to help these donkeys with your support and every single donation will make a difference. We are also planning a plaque in memory of our little friend, which we will erect on his home at Beach Boxes, Sidmouth.
