On Thursday afternoon we hosted a visit by Julie Girling, Member of the European Parliament for the South West who is a keen equestrian and has supported various initiatives in the European parliament put forward by The Donkey Sanctuary and other equine organisations who are members of the European animal welfare lobbying charity, Eurogroup for Animals which is based in Brussels.
Mrs Girling was able to meet staff and hear first-hand about all the incredible work we do in Europe and around the world. A highlight of the visit was meeting a number of donkeys that have been relinquished in to the long term care of the Sanctuary. Mrs Girling indicated that she would continue to support the findings of our research work and subsequent development of guidelines on donkey milk farming by highlighting the issue and promoting higher standards of care for donkeys within parliament and the European Commission.
Mrs Girling later tweeted: ‘Enjoyed visiting The Donkey Sanctuary. Great work in the UK & abroad. Let’s work together on future of donkey milk industry’
