The Donkey Sanctuary is one of the UK’s largest international animal welfare charities, currently supporting projects in over 35 countries worldwide.  We are working for a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued. We are achieving this by transforming the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.  This is a complex international organisation with wide ranging roles that bring its own challenge when delivering development interventions for our staff.

We now have an excellent opportunity for a Learning and Development Specialist to join our L&D Team to support the development of 700 staff from a broad range of disciplines, along with 400 volunteers that provide care and welfare to both animals and user groups. We are developing the move from traditional workshop based development to a more blended approach that identifies individual strengths and how these are developed in a workplace setting.  Our approach of identifying skills, mapping talent and identifying individual strengths was recognised by The Princess Royal Training Awards 2018 for excellence in training & skills development.

As Learning and Development Specialist you will have a strong belief in identifying individual strengths and enhancing employee contribution, and as an accomplished coach you will help others to believe in themselves and see what they are capable of. You will be self-motivated, pushing yourself hard to achieve what you want out of life, and this will be reflected in how you deliver assigned work. You will possess a natural ability to establish a rapport with others quickly and easily and will have a strong understanding of your own emotions and behaviour and how these affects others. Working in a complex organisation means that not every function is at the same point in its acceptance of this approach so a high degree of persistence will be needed to keep going when things prove difficult.

The role will involve:

  • Supporting the implementation of the talent management and development activities
  • Identifying our high potential staff by Facilitating Skills and Talent rating sessions with Managers
  • Performance coaching people managers as a key leadership skill across the organisation through small group & 1-2-1 activity
  • Developing our people managers to effectively performance manage their staff and volunteers.

If you feel you have the qualities, skills and experience to fulfil this varied, rewarding and vital role, and would like to be part of the evolving program of change taking place within the charity, we would love to hear from you. Based in Sidmouth, Devon – “an area of outstanding natural beauty” – this is a full-time, permanent contract starting as soon as possible.

Closing date for completed applications: 12.30pm on Wednesday 6 February 2019.
