Educating for generations to come

Posted on 27 April 2016.

The veterinary department at The Donkey Sanctuary is regarded as a centre of excellence when it comes to donkey veterinary care.

Preparation work has begun on a new facility which will help us build on our reputation both nationally and all around the world.

Our dedicated veterinary team offer advice and training to owners, professionals and students alike and work closely with our European projects.

Thanks to your kind donations, we will be able to utilise new training rooms, offering 24/7 advice to vets worldwide.

This dedication to training and donkey welfare was epitomised recently when we hosted a four-day event, welcoming partner organisations who provide care for donkeys and mules across Europe.

The aim was to bring together these organisations to learn and share from each other and plan for the future.

Our guests also received talks and demonstrations on dentistry, farriery, saddle packs, educating communities and much more.

Training, advice and education such as this is vital to achieve our vision of a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued.

The new veterinary facility will allow us to create a better environment for teaching and learning, and your donations are making our vision become a reality for thousands of donkeys and mules. Thank you.

Help us build a better future

A new hospital will enable us to help more donkeys in need. It will secure the work we already do and enable us to do even more. But we can’t do it without your help. Every penny you are able to give to our Hospital Appeal will make a difference.

By donating to our Hospital Appeal, you are helping us provide essential treatments, carry out vital surgery and treat sickness and disease for donkeys like Georgie. Thank you for everything that you do to support us.

Better for everyone

These are exciting times. Relocating the hospital to a new site will have a big impact on our main Sanctuary in Sidmouth, and we plan to use this opportunity to improve the visitor experience. We will be reverting some of the farm back to its former glory and introducing more donkeys to the heart of the Sanctuary as soon as the hospital and reception unit have been relocated. There will also be an interpretation centre. At present, we have no way to show supporters and visitors what we do around the world, so this facility will help us share our complete story; from how we began to where we are now. We’ll also have a better gift shop and restaurant from which proceeds support our work across the world. Better hospital plus better visitor experience equals better donkeys (and lots more of them).

Any money raised over our target will go towards building the hospital and future veterinary costs.
