When this brave little donkey required urgent care and attention, and someone to make him better, our dedicated veterinary staff sprang into action.
11-year-old Robson picked up a “nasty injury” on his leg before Donkey Sanctuary staff found him and rushed him to hospital .
Thanks to the expertise and quick-thinking of our hospital veterinary staff, young Robson has recovered well from the injury on his knee, and is once again able to join his best friends out in the paddock.
Alex Thiemann, Veterinary Surgeon here at The Donkey Sanctuary, said: “Robson lives at our Woods Farm based in Devon and we took a call saying that he had a severe wound on the inside of his left knee.
“We had to bring him in to the hospital for x-rays and emergency surgery right away. He was wounded and there was a lot of bleeding.
“It was haemorrhaging quite badly and we feared he might have an infected joint, which is pretty serious and would be bad news.
We had to bring him in for emergency surgery right away
“We anaesthetised him and carried out the surgery. He recovered well from that and stayed with us having his bandages changed for about two weeks.
“He went back to the farm and continued with his leg bandages on for another two weeks, which we also managed with a number of applications of cream to the wound.
“Robson is a very inquisitive donkey, and always likes peering through the fences to see what is going on.
“He was very good during all of his treatments and was pretty good all round, considering it was quite a nasty injury.
“He was kept company by is friend, but because he needed injections he wasn’t allowed out into the field, he just had to peer longingly over the fence, but he was great and pretty chilled.”
Robson was lucky to have such expert knowledge and a nearby facility to hand, but in reality many more donkeys need our help.
We have outgrown our current hospital, and we need your help to reach the total needed to build a new centre of veterinary excellence to make more donkeys better.
