Alex Thiemann’s love of donkeys started when she was very young.
Her family had two of their own - Jenny and Deedee, who she said were like her best friends. Alex was aware of The Donkey Sanctuary's work as she received Dr Elisabeth Svendsen’s books for Christmas and birthday presents.
This inspired Alex to write to Dr Svendsen whilst at Vet School, who agreed that Alex could go and spend two weeks with the team in Lamu. Alex said: “It was an amazing experience seeing the different types of problems and solutions that were needed for donkeys and the roles they had abroad which were so different from in the UK.”
Alex has now worked as a Veterinary Surgeon for The Donkey Sanctuary for 17 years, treating donkeys and mules on our farms.
She adds: "I think the most rewarding thing about my job is getting animals better. Teaching students or visiting vets from our overseas projects who are also going to be treating donkeys is incredibly fulfilling too, because you know that you are going to be passing something on to other people."
