Since 2008, Angela and Peter Scales have raised funds by holding annual walks with donkeys, ponies, dogs and a lot of humans in memory of their donkey called Webster. We received this lovely story of their latest walk in the Vale of the White Horse and would like to say a huge thank you for the amount of money raised towards our international work.
We were somewhat relieved to find that the temperature had dropped considerably on the morning of the walk and ,in fact, it was quite cloudy. Because of the heat of the previous couple of weeks a few donkey owners had decided not to travel their donkeys in such conditions. We had suggested that people could walk anytime after 7.30am but in the end everyone set off together at about 10.30am. There were 6 visiting donkeys and our own donkey Wave who decided that she really did not want to take part and on turning her round after a few hundred yards she trotted the whole way home!
Several dogs and humans enjoyed a gentle walk with the beautiful scenery of the Vale of the White Horse all around. We were revived with a couple of "pit stops" for drinks and, on our return, enjoyed a picnic in the donkey field.
Having read about the work of The Donkey Sanctuary's International Department with schools in Ethiopia we felt that we would like to donate the money from our 2013 Webster Walk to their activities in that country.
We would like to thank everyone who supported this year's walk by making donations and joining us on the day thereby enabling us to make a total donation of £2,133.75.
We have recently met the staff of the International Department and discussed with them our wish that the money would be used for a specific purpose.
As a result of this it has been agreed that it should be used for the purchase of equipment for the donkey assisted therapy project at Addis Abada which is run in joint collaboration between The Donkey Sanctuary and Cheshire Services. This has been set up to provide donkey assisted therapy for youngsters with disabilities and additional needs.
The Donkey Sanctuary has just produced a new specially designed saddle for use by children with additional needs so part of the money could well go towards its manufacture.
